A Holistic Approach to Dry Eye
Dry eye is a common condition that can cause discomfort and blurry vision. Many treatments can temporarily relieve symptoms, but addressing the underlying cause is essential for longer-term comfort.
We work closely with you to analyze your nutrition and lifestyle and understand how these factors contribute to your condition. Then, we can tailor a plan that manages your dry eye for longer-lasting relief.
What Impact Does Food Have on Vision?
Just like the rest of your body, your eyes rely on essential nutrients to function at their best. Beyond just supporting your eyesight, incorporating eye-friendly nutrients like omega-3s and lutein and zeaxanthin into your diet helps protect your vision from age-related conditions and maintains overall eye health.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids contain anti-inflammatory properties that may help treat dry eye symptoms and provide relief from the discomfort you’re experiencing. They can be found in fish, nuts, seeds, and fortified foods or supplements.
Lutein & Zeaxanthin
Lutein and zeaxanthin are essential parts of an eye-friendly diet. These carotenoids act as antioxidants that help protect the eyes from damage caused by free radicals, helping reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in kale, spinach, broccoli, peas, parsley, corn, and egg yolks.
Important Vitamins
Vitamin A supports the function of the cornea, the outer layer of your eye. It can be found in sweet potatoes, carrots, red peppers, and pumpkins.
Vitamin C protects the eye from UV light and oxidative damage. Oranges, broccoli, blackberries, and Brussels sprouts are some foods that are high in vitamin C.
Vitamin E has powerful antioxidant properties that help fight free radicals. Foods high in vitamin E include almonds, sunflower seeds, asparagus, and peanuts.
Finding Balanced Nutrition for Your Eyes
A healthy and balanced diet promotes good eye health and can decrease your chances of developing eye disease later on. For optimal eye health, make sure to eat plenty of whole grains, legumes, and colourful fruits and veggies.
A nutrient-rich diet is typically enough to provide you with all the vitamins and minerals you need. However, if you’re deficient in any area, supplements can help.
